What are some really good short stories?

short stories
hi5 asked:

I need some really good short stories that have deeper meaning/provoke thought. They should be less than about 15 pages. THe less the better. I am compiling a book of short stories, and I already have a lot of scary/creepy ones, so preferably not those types, although if that’s all you can think of then that’s fine

  1. Ted Says:

Though I may seem old-fashioned, I like Karel Čapek’s Tales from Two Pockets. Here’s one of them that I have managed to find in Enlish online:
Buy if you find a complete collection you will enjoy them all (I’m almost sure). They are not just ordinary short stories, each of them has some background, or subtle meaning, or some irony, or unexpectedness. And besides, Čapek was a person who 1) loved nature (was a great expert in cacti); 2) invented the word “robot” (together with his brother); 3) some years before Titanic sank he had written a story that described something of the kind (not the very best of his stories, but it’s just an interesting thing to be mentioned).
