I haven’t shelled out my money for a copy of Writers Market yet, but am wondering what publications are generally known as the most popular/ best known for submission and publishing of short stories (fiction - not necessarily genre specific, just contemporary fiction, modern fiction, etc).

So far we’ve read some great short stories, but they’ve all been rather depressing. If this were a film class I’d be golden, but alas, it is not. Anyone have any ideas?
